Álfrún, Saga and Hrefna, the three members of art rock band „The Post Performance Blues Band“, are fed up with performing in front of five-people audiences and getting paid in beer. Not wanting to waste precious time – they are in their early 40s, after all – the three women decide to give it another year: If they’re not pop stars by the end of the year, it’s over.
Band is a tragicomedic docufiction about female empowerment, (repeated) failure and the art of sticking together t o keep going. In search for allies and friendship and their excessive musical vision, the trio find the performance of their lifetimes.
Director Álfrún Örnólfsdóttir, who is a member of the band herself, imaginatively plays with the documentary form, often making the film feel like a mockumentary. Örnólfsdóttir leaves it up to the viewer to distinguish between fiction and reality. Along the way, she manages to give meaning to life’s chaos and to find resilience in rejection. In this way, Band tells the story of a triumphant sisterhood.
