After a drunken night, 30 year old Cassandra Haywood learns that her mother has died of a heart attack. While the family is busy organizing flowers and food, Cassandra’s mind is set on doing the funeral speech, but her relatives are so worried that she will make a scene that they try to prevent her from doing it by all possible means.

Looking for inspiration, Cassandra wanders through the snowy streets of Toronto, when various voices start arguing in her mind. She spirals into an identity crisis that escalates in increasingly absurd ways, shattering her image of her mother as well as her own emotional certainties and political convictions.

Based on a theater play by protagonists Amy Nostbakken and Norah Sadava, director Patricia Rozema (I’ve Heard The Mermaids Singing, When Night Is Falling) brings to the screen a complex and atmospheric drama that shows her great passion for creating something beyond genre conventions.
